WORD FORMATION: TURNING VERBS INTO ADJECTIVES

Have you watched the clip Unforgettable on our blog? In the song, the singer says that the girl is unforgettable. It means he can't forget her, isn't it?

The adjective unforgettable is formed with the prefix UN + verb FORGET + suffix ABLE. This is a very practical way of turning a word (here, the verb FORGET) into new words (an adjective, in this case).

Now you try. Look at the verbs below. Decide which prefix - UN / IN / IM - and suffix - ABLE / IBLE - to use in each case:

Eg.

Someone or something you can't forget is... UNFORGETTABLE

  1. Something you can't believe is...
  2. Something you can't imagine is...
  3. Something you can't comprehend is...
  4. Something no one can penetrate is...
  5. An action you can't justify is...
  6. Something you can't deny is...
  7. Something we can't avoid is... (2 possible answers)
  8. An idea we can't defend is...
  9. A road or path you can't pass is...
  10. Someone you can't rely on is...
  11. A situation you can't accept is...
  12. Something you can't destroy is...

ANSWERS:

1. unbelievable     2. unimaginable     3. incomprehensible     4. impenetrable

5. unjustifiable     6. undeniable     7. unavoidable or inevitable     8. indefensible

9. impassable     10. unreliable     11. unacceptable     12. indestructible

TIP: When you read a text, pay atttention to how these adjectives are formed and used. You can improve your vocabulary a lot by making use of prefixes and suffixes!
