Packing for a trip

Page history last edited by Monica 16 years, 3 months ago

What are the do's and don'ts of packing for a trip? Watch this video interview; it contains eight general questions. Can you find the answers to all of them? If you need, play each sequence more than once. Then check the answers here.

1. What are the biggest mistakes people make when packing?

Packing too many things is probably the biggest mistakes. We tend to carry much more than we need!

2. Does a new trip mean I should buy a new wardrobe?

It depends a bit on the type of trip. People who are on a honeymoon, of course, would like to have a new wardrobe. But in general this is a very expensive strategy! Maybe, if you really want, you can get a new tie or scarf...

3. What items should I leave at home when I travel?

Don't take fancy jewellery - you might lose it or get robbed.

Don't take all your credit cards, choose one or two and leave the other ones at home.

Take only one type of document (perhaps a passport or driving license), depending on the trip.

Perhaps you should also leave your keys - you might lose them during the trip and you won't need them!

4. What items do most people generally forget to pack?

People usually forget simple things, like a toothbrush, deodorant or a comb. Fortunately, these are easy to buy most anywhere!

5. Can my checked luggage be locked and secure?

Yes, but it may not be a very good idea. Although TSA locks can be opened with a master key, TSA staff (who are responsible for security) sometimes just break the padlocks - which are expensive.

6. What are the reasons my bag might be held by the TSA when I travel?

They may want to check any luggage carrying an object that looks odd, or which shows traces of gun powder (quite common if you've been hunting, for example). Also, don't take liquids, as security staff always worry about them nowadays.

7. What's the secret to getting through airport security easily?

Have all your things organized in your bags and don't carry liquids (shampoo, lotions, etc.). You can always buy them at your destination or use the ones provided by the hotel.

8. How can I avoid excess baggage charges?

Check the weight limit with the airline company (this information is usually on their website, but you can also phone them). If it's a bit over the limit, consider taking a few things as carry-on (hand luggage) or check if there is anything that you can leave out, like that extra pair of shoes...
