Homophones

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 10 months ago

Look at the sentence below, taken from the video ('Medieval helpdesk) subtitles. Can you find a spelling mistake?

  • "So to get further, you grab a peace of paper and turn the page over on the other side."

The problem is that they wrote "a peace of paper", and not "a piece of paper". These two words are homophones; they are pronounced exactly the same way, but the written form and the meaning are different.

Words like here/hear and break/brake are examples of homophones.

Would you like to know more about homophones? Try these online activities! There is a quiz and a great memory game (with sound, so don't forget to have the speakers on!).

There is also a crossword puzzle to complete. Click on the numbers and listen to the sentences (turn on your speakers!). Write the words you hear on the blanks.
