Hay-on-Wye: matching the programme

This activity can help you prepare for the reading paper of exams such as the FCE and CAE.

 

Here is a list of some of last year's literary attractions at Hay-on-Wye Festival. Can you match the descriptions to the title of each presentation? There is one extra title you won't need to use.

1.   The travel writer retraces the hippie trail from Istambul to Kathmandu. Since the Summer of Love the countries that offered so much to these dreamers have confronted the full force of modernity, and been transformed into political and religious minefields. Illustrated talk.

 

2.   The Canadian poet Margaret Atwood gives us her inversion of Homer's Odyssey, retold by Penelope and the twelve handmaids. Odysseus slaughtered on his return from Troy, Dido and 20 years away from his palace.

 

3.   The former American VIP examines the nature, effects and potential catastrophes of global warming. 'We face a planetary emergency. But it's crucial to avoid being paralysed by that knowledge and instead feel empowered by it in order to bring about the changes that are imperative now.' Introduced by Graydon Carter.

 

4.   A guest-star panel of film-makers chew over the results of the Guardian's public poll to find the nations favourite film of the book. The initial 50 can be found on the website listing for this event. But how on earth did we end up with this shortlist of ten? Why no Frodo? Godfather I or Godfather II? Full line-up to be announced on 31 May.

 

5.   The Word Doctor welcomes you to an open consultation. Anything you ever wanted to know about language? Either email questions in advance to thedoc@hayfestival.com, or come along prepared to ask in person.

 

6.   The actor, writer and director, star of M*A*S*H*, ER, The West Wing, Crimes and Misdemeanours, and The Aviator talks about his life and work, and his memoir Never Have Your Dog Stuffed.

 

7.   Conversation with the author of Midnight's Children, The Satanic Verses, and most recently Shalimar The Clown. Appignanesi is the author of Free Expression is No Offence, Simone de Beauvoir, Freud's Women and The Memory Man.

 

8.   Storyteller Shonaleigh Cumbers is joined by musicians Jo Veal, Ilana Cravitz and Mike Layward to introduce a fairytale... from Auschwitz. The tale is of three children found in the ruined sewers of the ghetto and their encounter with the mystical Fool, who leps them live their lives to the full when all seems lost. 14 yrs-adult.
