ASPECTS OF LOVE

For Yale University psychologist Dr Robert Sternberg, love has no mystery. He has dedicated almost a decade of research to dissecting love and predicting the long-term success of romantic entanglements. Sternberg's Triangular Theory of love comprises three components. The first is intimacy, a sharing of thoughts and feelings. The second is passion, ....J.... and thirdly there is decision and commitment.  (1) ......: the decision to love someone and the pledge to nurse that love through good and bad times. The way you combine these three components dictates the type of love you experience. Intimacy alone results in an unspectacular liking, while passion alone generates an infatuated crush. Overdo the decision commitment and you end up with what Sternberg calls empty love,  (2) ....... . If you have intimacy as well as passion, you have romantic love,  (3) ....... . Complete the triangle by pledging everlasting devotion and you enjoy consummate love,  (4) ....... . Fortunately, differences in the three different styles of love are treatable. Sternberg says the answer is quite simple. If your partner craves more intimacy, passion or commitment, then you must identify  (5) ....... and do your best to provide more of it - if you want to keep your partner, that is.
